The Lady Cardinals played well but come up just short, falling 2-1 in to St. Pius X in the Class 4 state semi-finals.
In set #1, St. Pius started quickly opening up a quick 8-4 lead. Slowly the Cardinals started inching back in and finally caught them at 12. After taking a brief lead at 13-12, the Lancers scored six consecutive to open the five point lead that they then held to the finish of a 25-20 win.
Set #2 was all Lancers. An early 8-2 deficit was not able to be overcome as the Cardinals could only string points together twice, one six point run and a three point rally late in falling 25-14 and now trailing 2-0.
The Lady Cardinals responded in the third set, scoring the first five points, extending to 8-5. Getting the serve back on a Jaylee VanBecelaere kill and Avery Pogue serving, a kill from Kaelyn Maxwell who then combined with VanBecelaere on a block and unforced error on the Lancers put the Cardinals ahead 12-5. Trading points until 17-13, another four point surge got them past 20 points first and they went on to grab a 25-18 win.
The final set was close throughout, neither team able to build more than a four point advantage, with the Cardinals holding a slim lead at 17-14. The turning point was a five point run by the Lancers as they grabbed a 19-17 lead. From their each team traded points until the end with St. Pius capturing the match with a 25-23 win.
Jaylee VanBecelaere was credited with 12 kills with Marlee Harper and Kaelyn Maxwell each with 11. Defensively, Avery Gardner recorded 12 digs.
