Lady Cardinals punch their ticket to the Final Four

The Lady Cardinals punched their ticket to the Final Four with a sweep of the Marshfield Blue Jays in quarterfinal action on Saturday.  The second trip to the championship round in the last four years.

Marshfield served first, but on the first opportunity Kaelyn Maxwell put away the kill and the Cardinals earned the first point of the day.  A close set from the start, neither team was able to garner more than a three point separation, until Webb City took a 23-19 lead, forcing a Blue Jay timeout.  Then the Blue Jays scored six of the next seven points to hold match point with the serve.   The Cardinals forced a side out to tie the game at 25 and then a Marlee Harper kill followed by an ace from Savannah Crane had Webb City taking the first set 27-25.

Webb City took early control of set two.  Three kills from Harper, a kill from Jaylee VanBecelaere, back to back points from Jocelyn Maxwell, followed by an ace from Avery Pogue and Webb City had built an 11-4 lead.  At 19-10, the Blue Jays mounted a rally to close to within three at 19-16 before a quick set over the net from Crane put an end to the run.  Trading points to the end of the set, a side out from a Jocelyn Maxwell from the back set of Crane and a Kaelyn Maxwell smash off the attempted Blue Jay block that fell to the floor put an end to a 25-19 win.   Webb City was now just a set away.

The final set was played as one would expect of a quarterfinal match.  Never separated by more than two points, it looked as if the set was tilting toward the Blue Jays after it was tied at 17.  Marshfield scored five of the next six points to take a 22-18 lead, forcing a Webb City timeout.  A side out on a VanBecelaere kill was followed by a dig from Avery Pogue back over the net that was mishandled, a Kaelyn Maxwell kill and two unforced  errors on the Blue Jays that put the Cardinals back in front 23-22 and a Marshfield timeout.  The Blue Jays earned the next point to tie the score, but Webb City got the serve right back.  Jaylee VanBecelaere, who served first back in game one, now served last when Adelyn Maxwell sent a kill off Blue Jay hands to give the Cardinals the 25-23 win.

Jaylee VanBecelaere led with nine kills, followed up by Marlee Harper and Savannah Crane with eight each.  Crane also delivered 27 assists.  Avery Gardner patrolled the back line recording 26 digs.

Webb City will now travel to St. Joseph where they will face St. Pius X (Festus) at 4:00 on Wednesday in the Class 4 semi-finals.
