Webb City's girls basketball winning streak in the Large Division of the Central Ozark Conference came to a halt on Monday night.
Republic stopped the visiting Cardinals 73-59 to snap the 15-game string.
"I thought we actually played well," Webb City coach Brad Shorter said on Tuesday of the Monday effort. "We did a lot of good things. We moved the ball well. We had chemistry. Our effort in the second half was outstanding."
That second-half effort, Shorter said, was illustrated by the Cardinals allowing only four offensive rebounds after the Tigers snared 16 in the opening half. Webb City also finished with 22 turnovers.
"We need to do a better job on the offensive boards and eliminate some of those turnovers," Shorter said. "Do those things and we would have been right there. ... competitive until the finish. We can do a better job in those areas.
"The Republic depth allowed them to have fresh legs most of the game," Shorter said.
The result at Republic left both teams 9-3 overall and 1-1 in the COC Large.
Mikaela Burgess, a 5-foot-6 sophomore, hit three 3s in scoring 26 points for the Cardinals. Alyssa Williams, a 5-6 senior, and 5-7 sophomore Megan Heman each tallied eight. Kaitlin Beason, a 5-7 sophomore, added seven points and as many rebounds.
Gabbie Gannaway, a 5-4 senior and the team scoring leader with Burgess, didn't tally in playing less than a quarter.
"We believe Gabbie was injured late in the game against Neosho (last Monday)," Shorter said. "We hope it's a hyper-extended knee. It's a good sign that she's been able to at least get back on it."
Gannaway scored 24 points against Neosho, Shorter noted, and added 15 against Seneca in the Cardinals' next outing.
Webb City resumes on Jan. 19 in the Kickapoo Tournament ironically against Republic at 5:30 p.m.
