Lady Cardinals fall short in semi-final battle

The Lady Cardinals fell to the Red Knights of Incarnate Word in the MSHSAA basketball semifinals 60-56.  The loss sends the Cardinals into the third place game at 1:15 on Saturday.

The Lady Cardinals shot 70% in the first quarter and had a 9 point lead midway through the quarter before ultimately leading 19-12 at the end of the quarter.  The Cardinals opened with 3 consecutive long range three's from Kyndal Clark, Breanna Baker and Hailey Roderique, and then Kaitlin Jaeger was able to score inside.

In the second quarter, the Knights started to use their height advantage inside to outscore the Cardinals 18-8.  The halftime score found the Cardinals trailing 30-27.

Webb City opened the half with another Clark 3 pointer to tie the game, but the Knights kept looking inside and slowly started pulling away and led by as many as 11 points on two separate occasions.

But the ladies had one last run in them.  Starting with a steal and bucket by Baker that put that score at 47-56 with a little more than two minutes left, Kyndal Clark then launched three consecutive three's.  This left them down by three, 59-56, with 48 seconds remaining.  The defense then caused a Knight turnover and they had the ball with 28 seconds remaining, but after working the offensive end, a last desperation three failed to connect.

The Cardinals were able to force the Knights into 16 turnover on the game, but the Knights were able to shot 73% in the second half.

Kyndal Clark led the scoring with 21 points, followed by Jaeger with 13.

The Cardinals will return to MIZZOU Arena to face St Josephs Academy in the third place game at 1:15 on Saturday.
