Wichita Heights, ranked No. 1 in Kansas Class 6A beat the Lady Cards 81-61 at its own game (pressure defense & fast breaks) in the Hy-Vee shootout played at Avila University in Kansas City.
Webb led 19-16 after the first quarter of play, but Heights went on a 12-0 run. Both teams went to their bench in the first half to give starters a much needed break as the game was very physical and fast paced. The Lady Cards battled back to tie up the game 33 all at the half, but the 3rd quarter was when the advantage stayed with the Lady Falcons as the Lady Cards committed more turnovers and lost the battle of the boards in rebounding. Mary Sims and Jhasmin Bowen fired in 26 and 22 points, respectively, to spark Wichita Heights, which outscored the Cardinals 26-17 in the third quarter to break the 33-33 halftime deadlock.
“We didn’t rebound well (41-28 disadvantage on the
boards) and we didn’t take care of the ball (20 turnovers,
two fewer than Heights),” Webb City head coach Brad Shorter
said. “What we thought were keys to winning the ball game, we
didn’t do them. “They are a very athletic team.
They were awfully good, but we didn’t play very
well.”
Kaitlin Jaeger poured in 32 points and Hailey Roderique
contributed 13 points with Kyndal Clark scoring 10 points for Webb
City.
Lady Cards return to action Dec. 27 against Hamblen West of
Morristown, Tenn., in the KTXR Classic played at Drury University
in Springfield. Tipoff is set for 8:30 p.m.
