Cardinals fall to Joplin in an extra innings home run shootout

WEBB CITY, Mo. -- The final regular season game for Lady Cardinals Softball was nothing short of exciting Monday night. The team wrapped up the season at home in a COC matchup against Joplin.

What started as a low scoring match, the game was tied 3-3 in the bottom of the 5th. That's when Kylee Sargent sent home the first 2-run home run of the night. Cardinals were now up 5-3.

The game stayed neck and neck, with Joplin earning several runs and the Cardinals needing to play catch up. Things got tied up 6-6 again in the 7th, and off to extra innings the team went.

This is where the scoring started to open up. Joplin's Riley Kelly crushed it outside of the park to make the home run single and take the lead, but the Cardinals tied it up once again and it was now 8-8 heading into the 9th.

The Eagles made a statement with a 3-run home run by Jadyn Pankow, and they'd score another run later to take a 4 point lead. The Cardinals had more gas in the tank when they took over. Addison Brown nailed it to left over the fence for a 3-run home run, and then it became a 1 point game.

At each moment, it seemed like the game would end, but the scoring kept going. Ultimately, the Cardinals could not complete the 9th inning comeback as Joplin's Ava Wolfe had a swinging strikeout against Rylynn McFarland.

Joplin took the game against the Cardinals 12-11, and now both teams head off to the Class 5 District 7 Tournament in Lee's Summit. Cardinals face Lee's Summit on Thursday.
