Ali Vanzant delivered a bases loaded single in the bottom of the seventh to claim a 6-5 victory on Thursday afternoon.
The Lady Cardinals were down 5-3 after five innings, but scored twice in the sixth to tie the game before plating the winning run.
Webb City took an early lead in the first inning as Quincie Capron opened the game with a double down the left field line. Mariah Newby laid down a bunt that the Monett catcher threw down the right field line, allowing Capron to score.
After the Cubs scored in the top of the third, the Cardinals came right back in the bottom of the frame as Kaylee Cristy doubled to right center, scoring Newby who had reached on a single.
Addie Darby struck out the first five Cub hitters she faced and had retired eight in a row before allowing a base runner. She allowed a unearned run in the third as Monett got their first baserunner on a Cardinal error, and later scored on a double. Newby ended the threat with a diving catch in center field for the third out. With two outs in the fourth, Monett plated three runs on three hits and another Cardinal error.
After tallying single runs in the first, third and fourth inning, Webb City caught the Cubs in the sixth. Mareika Turpen led off the inning with a double to right and advanced to third on a Kaia Storm single. Ashley Alexander drove in Turpen with a sac fly and Capron singled to score Storm one batter later.
Monett threated in the top of the seventh, but a baserunning error ended the threat with no damage. Cristy drove a triple over the right fielders head to start the inning and Monett issued two walks to load the bases. VanZant then drove a solid sinle to left to end the game.
Amy Morris earned the victory in relief of Darby, pitching the last three innings.
Cristy picked up three hits on the day, a single, double and triple. Storm, Newby and Capron each chipped in two hits. Newby had reached base in her first seven plate appearances to start the year, before grounding out in the sixth.
Webb City will play three pool games tomorrow in the Joplin tournament before bracket play on Saturday.
