The Cardinals season came to an end with an opening round loss in the district tournament to Willard 79-59. Despite the loss, Webb City (15-12) finished with their 11th consecutive winning record.
Cardinal Leaders
Trae Turner - Finished his Cardinal career with a 20 point night on 8-13 shooting and recorded a team high five steals.
Hudson Matthiessen - Despite face guarded all night, shot a perfect 4-4 from the floor and ended with nine points.
Game Recap
Playing on the Wildcat home floor, Webb City punched first with a three from Mason Young and buckets from Holden Johnson and Carson Anderson to lead 7-4 in the first three minutes. The lead was short lived with Willard leading 17-12 after one and, with the Cardinal hampered by foul trouble, threatened to run away as they built a 18 point lead with 90 seconds to go in the half. Trae Turner stole the ball and converted and after another Tiger turnover, Austin Essley buried a three followed by a another Turner bucket and the score was trimmed back to 11 at 36-25 going to the locker room.
The third quarter was a replica of the second as the Tigers once again pulled out to 18 points but a Cardinal rally at the end of the quarter cut the deficit to 13 and then back to back buckets from Hudson Matthiessen to open the fourth got Webb City back to single digits at 61-52. That was as close as the game would get with Willard finally pulling away to the win.
Team Stats
The Cardinals were only 4-24 from behind the arc while Willard was successful on 9 of 22. Webb City was able to win the turnover battle (22-15) it was the on the glass where the Tigers controlled the game limiting the Cardinals to one shot on most trips.
