Cards outlast Nevada in opening round contest

Frustrated by the slow play of the Nevada Tiger offense, the Cardinal offense sputtered through the first three quarters before pulling ahead for the 43-39 win.  The win, the fifth consecutive first round win for Webb City in the tournament, will have the Cardinals facing Shawnee Mission South in the semi-finals on Friday.

Jumping ahead 7-3 midway through the first quarter on two baskets from Trae Turner and a long range bomb from Hudson Matthiessen, the Tigers pulled ahead 8-7 at the end of one.  Scoring was scarce in the second quarter as well with Webb City only netting four makes and trailing by two, 18-16 at half.

After a third quarter where Nevada held a slight lead throughout, Webb City took the lead for good as the fourth quarter started.  Jackson Adams hit a three to open the final stanza.  After the Tigers tied the score, it was another two minutes of game time before Mason Young scored and 90 seconds later Adams hit another three to give the Cardinals a five point advantage.   This forced the Tigers to think more about scoring instead of working long possessions.  The Tigers were able to make two more buckets, but were forced to foul and send the Cardinals to the free throw line.  Hudson Matthiessen knocked down two, Jackson Adams for one and finally Trae Turner iced the game with two inside the final seconds.

The 43 points was the lowest output in a win since 2019.

Adams finished with 13 points.  Outrebounded in the game, Trae Turner did grab a team high five for Webb City.  Spending the majority of the game on defense, the Cardinals did force the Tigers into 19 turnovers on their 48 possessions.
