Webb City opened the 2017 football season with a 27-12 win at Cardinal Stadium.
The Cardinal defense was introduced to crowd prior to the game and then they made an impact immediately. Carl Junction elected to recieve the opening kickoff and on third down Terrell Kabala intercepted a bulldog pass, returning to the eight yard line. Three plays later, Durand Henderson scored the first touchdown of the year with a five yard run.
After trading possessions, the Cardinals forced a punt on the next series, but the Bulldog punter pinned the Cardinal offense on their own two yard line. On third down, from their own 10, junior quarterback Cash Link hit Alex Gaskill with 90 yard touchdown pass and the Cardinals were on top 14-0 with just over 3 mintues left in the first quarter.
The Cardinal offense was unable to sustain any offensive drives for the remainder of the half, punting on their next four possessions. Carl Junction scored twice, once on an eighty yard run near the end of the first quarter and then scoring again late in the half. Both extra points were missed and the Cardinals led 14-12 at the half.
The Cardinals got the ball to open the second half and Henderson scored quickly on the third play of the half, scampering 73 yards down the near sideline. Sophomore kicker Sergio Perez added his third extra point of the game for a 21-12 lead.
Brenyn Surber intercepted the Bulldog quarterback late in the third quarter and set up the offense on the Carl Junction thirty seven yard line. Henderson scored his third touchdown, capping a seven play drive with a three yard run.
Henderson finished the game with 134 yards rushing. Link was 6 for 10 passing for 170 yards. Gaskill caught five of those passes for 166 receiving yards.
Defensively, Gaskill led with 10 tackels with Cade Beason racking up 8 tackles. Elijah Robinson had two sacks on the evening.
Webb City will be at home next Friday as the entertain Carthage. Kick off is set for 7:00 pm.
