ON TO THE DOME

ON TO THE DOME

The Cardinals have earned another trip to St Louis and the Class 4 Championship with a 47-7 win over the St. Mary's Dragons.

Webb City, after recovering an onside kick to start the game, scored quickly as senior quarterback John Roderique found Kohl Slaughter with the first of his three touchdown passes.  The Cardinals were on top 7-0 before the first minute was gone from the clock.

The defense forced the Dragons into a three and out, and after the punt went out of bounds, the offense took over on the St. Mary's 46 yard line.

Roderique opened the drive with a 15 yard completion to Slaughter, before picking up six yards on a running play.  Phoenix Johnson ran for 14 yards down to the Dragon eleven yard line.  Cooper Smith carried the ball on the next three plays, scoring from two yards out and after an Alex Easley extra point, Webb City was ahead 14-0.

Austin White, senior defensive back, intercepted the Dragon quaterback on the next play and the offense began their third drive of the day from the same spot as the other drives, the St Mary's forty six yard line.

This drive began with a twenty two yard completion to tight end Cooper Strasser.  Smith carried twice for gains of eleven and nine, putting the ball at the four yard line.  Roderique then threw his second touchdown pass of the day, this one to Jalen Vaden and the Cardinals had a 21-0 lead after the first quarter.

The defense forced a Dragon fumble and the offense finally had to start the next drive on their side of the field, at the forty eight yard line.  Jake Kent caught the seven yard touchdown pass to finish the drive.

St Mary's, forced to gamble on fourth down insided their own territory, was stuffed by the defense and turned the ball back over the Webb City offense with only thirty seven yards to go.  Roderique ran for the first thirteen yards, completed a pass to Hayden Ford for nine yards, and Smith danced into the end zone from fifteen yards out and the Cardinals had their 34-0 lead at halftime.

The Cardinals scored twice in the second half.  Cooper Smith scored his third touchdown of the afternoon on the opening drive of the half and Trey Parra finished the scoring with a touchdown run.
