Webb City wins big over Hillcrest

Webb City wins big over Hillcrest

The opening kickoff was a bummer for Hillcrest and it didn't get any better as Webb City stopped the Hornets 49-0 in a MSHSAA Class 4 quarterfinal football game at Shumate Stadium.

Jamison Cady rushed for five touchdowns as Breckin Williams directed the Cardinals' triple option to near perfection.

Officials had the lights on from the beginning for this overcast, blustery Saturday matinee.

The Cardinals, who didn't complete a pass, rushed for 478 yards after a 494-yard effort on the ground in their 63-21 sectional win against Jefferson City Helias Catholic.

No. 1 ranked Webb City (13-0), defending champion, travels to Savannah (12-1) next Saturday for the semifinals. Savannah won 13-6 in overtime at Harrisonville.

Hillcrest finished 11-2 under John Beckham in achieving its best postseason performance and an Ozark Conference championship.

Said Webb City coach John Roderique: "We couldn't have played much better on defense against a team with a lot of weapons.

"You have to credit our players and assistant coaches (Mike Smith coordinates the defense)," Roderique said. "Our coaches had the players prepared."

Webb City statistics had the Hornets with minus 28 yards rushing. Quarterback Matt Futrell threw for 108 yards on 13 of 29 with three interceptions.

Receiving great Dorial Green-Beckham had seven receptions for 58 yards,

"We didn't let him get loose," Roderique said. "We wanted people to be close to him."

Hillcrest bobbled the opening kickoff near its goal line and covered the ball at its 1. The Hornets reached only the 5 before punting against the stout wind.

Webb City took over at the Hillcrest 26. Cady picked up 9 yards and Phoenix Johnson gained 12 and 4 to set up Cady's 1-yard scoring run. Alex Easley kicked the extra point at 9:09.

Webb City, on its second possession, started on its 37 after another Hillcrest punt. Johnson's 13-yard carry started the drive that was capped by Cady's 38-yard scoring run at 5:14.

The Cardinals moved 71 yards in 11 plays for their third touchdown at 8:58 in the second period. Cady's 5-yard scoring run was the second play after Williams' 10-yard scoring run was nullified by a holding penalty.

A safety at 6:35 and Cady's 7-yard scoring run at 6:08 made it 29-0 at the half. Jarvis Jones' 22-yard run and Johnson's 17 set up Cady's score.

Webb City took the kickoff to open the second half and zipped 67 yards in just five plays with Williams' 38-yard run keying the drive and Johnson's 24-yard run providing the TD.

Cady's 1-yard run at 8:21 in the third quarter made it 42-0. The scoring march of just 20 yards was set up by Logan Williams stripping the ball from a receiver.

Said a grinning Cady: "It wasn't just me. It was our line. ... and no one can run like Phoenix (Johnson).

"I'm ready for the semifinals. I could play right now," Cady said.

Williams, Johnson, Cady and Co. left the field at 4:32.

Trey Parra's 3-yard scoring run at 6:21 in the fourth period closed out the scoring.

Johnson  rushed 17 times for 163 yards to hike his season total to 1,538. Williams added 118 on just seven carries and Cady, nearing 1,000, had 89 yards on 12.
