Cardinals get past Neosho

Webb City, winning its 75th straight regular-season game, more than doubled the Neosho yardage in beating the Wildcats 37-7 on Friday night in Cardinal Stadium.

Webb City, defending Missouri Class 4 champion, improved to 4-0 in the Central Ozark Conference Large Division and dropped the Wildcats to 0-4, 0-2.

Webb City, which led 37-0 at the half, had 394 yards — 240 on the ground — to 151 total for the Wildcats.

Said Cardinal coach Roderique: "I thought we were sharp on offense. We did a good job of getting off the ball. We played very well except for a couple of goal-line fumbles (probably costing the Cardinals touchdowns)."

Webb City defensively didn't allow a first down until 4:31 in the second period.

"Obviously, we played well on defense," Roderique said.

Added Webb City defensive coordinator Mike Smith: "I thought the defense played very well. I'm proud of the players. We had to do some real moving around (because of the Neosho size)."

Jose Speer, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound junior end, was among several Cardinals who performed well on defense, Smith said.

"Quickness is Speer's best attribute," Smith said. "He also has good technique."

Neosho, which had poor field position most of the first half, fell behind 20-0 after one quarter.

Webb City did it on the ground. Phoenix Johnson scored on a 28-yard run, Jamison Cady a 5 and Johnson a 6.

Johnson's 40-yard punt return set up his second TD and he shook loose from several tackles on his longer scoring run. Cady's 28-yard carry set up his score.

Webb City scored in the second quarter on John Roderique's 18-yard pass to Kohl Slaughter, Alex Easley's 35-yard field goal and Breckin Williams' 50-yard pass to Jarvis Jones.

Jones ran under Williams' floater down the right sideline on the last play of the half.

The Cardinals threw for 154 yards with Williams 6 of 9 for 121 yards and Roderique 3 of 3 for 33.

Cady rushed nine times for 100 yards, Johnson seven for 59 and Cooper Smith, highlighted by a 44-yarder, five for 53. Jones caught four passes for 59 yards and Slaughter two for 43.
