Mason Young tossed a complete game shutout while Mason Williams went 4-4 at the plate to lead the Cardinals in a 4-0 win over Carl Junction. Avenging a season opening loss, Webb City advances to their seventh consecutive district final appearance and will attempt to claim their fifth distinct title in a row.
Young, throwing his second complete game shutout in a row, only allowed the Bulldogs to have more than one base runner in one inning. After setting the Bulldogs down in order in the first, he worked around a double to lead off the second. A single in the third, a walk in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings was all that Carl Junction could muster in the first six innings. After quickly getting two outs in the seventh, he allowed a walk and infield single to give the Bulldogs a glimmer of hope. A diving back hand stop by Konnor Hood at first and a toss to Young covering the bag ended the game. So complete was the pitching performance, he struck out six, induced four outs on tappers back to the mound and only three fly ball outs. The defense did not commit a fielding error.
On offense, the Cardinals wasted little time in jumping ahead. Karsen Myers drew a lead off walk and scored when Mason Williams doubled to right center. Lake Johnson drove in Williams as he ripped a double down the right field line. Two outs later, Braden Strickland stroked a run scoring single to center to plate Johnson.
Mason Williams led off the third with single, followed by a single from Johnson and a walk to Trevor Lofland to load the bases. Mason Young hit a drive to deep left center that was caught in front of the fence, deep enough for Williams to tag and score the fourth run. After. a Bulldog pitching change in the fifth, Williams was the only Cardinal to record a hit, collecting two more singles.
The Cardinals will now take on Willard in the District 6 championship at 6:00 on Friday.
