In a battle of top ranked teams the Cardinals scored two runs late and took down Willard 5-3 in a game played at Missouri Southern.
Webb City scored three times in the bottom of the first. Mason Williams drew a one out walk and moved to second on a single to left. A ball hit down the third base line by Trevor Lofland got past the third baseman for an error allowing Williams to score. On the play Johnson took third and Lofland went on to second. Hustle got the next two runs on the board. Braden Strickland hit a ground ball in the fole at second and beat out the throw to first for an infield single. Johnson scored easily and Lofland never slowed down, scoring all the way from second on the infield hit.
The Tigers got an run back in the third and tied it in the fourth. Webb City was held scoreless despite loading the bases in the second and then lost runners in a couple of base running blunders, leaving the game tied 3-3 after five innings.
Mason Young set the Tigers down in order in the top of the sixth. After a pitching change for the Tigers in the bottom of the sixth, Dawson McMullen began the inning with walk and moved to second on a sac bunt from Karsen Myers. A wild throw on a Mason Williams ground ball put runners at first and third. Lake Johnson pulled the next pitch into right scoring McMullen with the go ahead run. A walk to Trevor Lofland loaded the bases for Mason Young who lofted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Williams, giving the Cardinals a 5-3 lead.
Mason Young finished the complete game pitching victory getting a foul pop out and then striking out the final two batters.
Webb City moved to 3-0 in COC West division play. The win also means the top three teams in the district now are 1-1 against each other.
Braden Strickland went 2-4, driving in two. Lake Johnson was the only other Cardinal with two hits. Mason Williams scored twice.
Mason Young struck out five and scattered three hits in earning his third win of the year.
Webb City will be at Parkview on Thursday and back home on Friday with Pea Ridge, Ark.
