The Cardinals forced the Huskies into a tough defensive play and came away with a 4-2 win.
The Huskies from Arlington Heights, IL, struck early with a two run first inning off of starter Mason Young. A base hit to center, a wild pitch and then a singles to left and then right put two runs on the board for John Hersey.
Webb City threatened in the home portion of the first, putting runners at second and third before a ground ball out ended the frame. The Cardinals finally got on the board in the third. Mason Williams replaced Dawson McMullen with a fielders choice, moving to third on a stolen base and scored on a rbi ground out from Trevor Lofland. Mason Young drove home Lake Johnson with a booming double to deep center to tie the score.
Mason Young kept the Huskies off the board for the remaining three innings of his appearance. He finished with eight strikeouts in his four innings of work. Tate Lewis followed and worked a flawless fifth and sixth inning.
It was the bottom of the sixth where the Cardinals pushed across two more runs without the benefit of a base hit. Barret Weller was hit to open the inning and pinch hitter Abel Getz worked a walk to put two aboard. A sac bunt from Bryson Bard moved both runners to second and third. With the Huskie infield pulled in, Karsen Myers grounded a ball to the back hand side of short, who came up cleanly and threw to home, but the catcher was unable to handle the throw. With the ball then ricocheting off Weller toward the backstop, Getz kept coming and scored all the way from second giving the Cardinals the 4-2 lead.
Tate Lewis put John Hersey down in order in the seventh, striking out the first two hitters and then coaxing a ground ball out to third to preserve the win. He struck out six in his three innings of work to pick up the win.
The Cardinals will take on Prospect IL on Thursday with the game being played on the campus of MSSU.
