Big second inning propels Cardinals to opening round win

Big second inning propels Cardinals to opening round win

The Cardinals exploded for eight runs in the second inning in dispatching the Mustangs 11-1 in the opening round of the district tournament.

After the Mustangs scored once in the top of the first, Mason Williams unloaded a solo home run to left in the bottom of the inning to tie the score.

The second inning almost came and went with a whimper.  Luke Beverlin opened the frame with a double to center and one out later advanced to third on a bunt single from Karsen Myers.  A fly ball out left the Cardinals with two on with two outs.  A walk to Braden Strickland loaded the bases before Andrew Young unloaded them with a triple to left center.  A walk to Mason Williams was followed by a run scoring single from Brock Renfro.  Mason Young doubled in two more runs.  Luke Beverlin walked in his second at bat of the inning putting two runners on for Brody Eggleston to drive in with a double.  The Cardinals now led comfortably, 9-1.

An unearned run in the third pushed the lead to 10-1.  The game ended in the fifth with a base hit to right from Brock Renfro scoring Andrew Young invoking the mercy rule and an 11-1 win.

Four different Cardinals had two hits each in the game to lead an 11 hit attack.  Andrew Young finished 2-3 with three rbis and three runs scored.  Mason Willams 2-2 with two walks reached base four times.  Brock Renfro drove in four runs with his two base hits.  Luke Beverlin finished 2-2 with a walk.  Webb City recorded six extra base hits on the day with four doubles, a triple and a home run.

Mason Young earned the win pitching the first three innings, striking out five.  Braden Strickland worked the final two innings, striking out two.

Webb City will advance to take on the Belton Pirates in the semi-final round on Thursday evening.
