Cardinals win season opener

Webb City opened the 2018 season with a 9-1 win over Bentonville. 

The Cardinals scored 5 times in the first with two outs to take the early lead.  Will Larson led off by drawing a walk advancing to second and third on consecutive ground outs before scoring the first run on a Tiger wild pitch.  Singles by Matt Duley and Tylor Morehead combined with Zach Biastock being hit by a pitch loaded the bases.  Designated hitter Bryson Mathews drove in two runs with a single to right.  Biastock scored the fourth run of the inning on double steal and the a single by Alex Gaskill scored Mathews with the final run of the inning.

Tyler Martin, holding the Tigers without a hit until the fifth inning, picked up the win.  Only allowing one run on two hits, he struck out six on the day.  Duley got the final three outs to finish the game.

Duley, Morehead and Mathews recorded two hits each to led the Cardinal offense.

Webb City (1-0) will be back at home on Monday to open the LAEL tournament taking on Carl Junction at 4:30.
